Slip Disc
What is a slip disc, and what causes it?
- A slipped disc, also known as a herniated disc or ruptured disc, occurs when the soft inner core of a spinal disc bulges out through the tough outer layer, putting pressure on nearby nerves.
- It is often caused by age-related wear and tear, repetitive stress or strain on the spine, lifting heavy objects incorrectly, or sudden traumatic injury.
What are the symptoms of a slip disc?
- Pain: Sharp, shooting pain that radiates from the lower back or buttocks down the back of one leg.
- Numbness or tingling: Sensations of numbness, tingling, or pins and needles in the leg or foot.
- Weakness: Weakness or difficulty moving the affected leg or foot.
Worsened pain with certain - Changes in reflexes: Diminished or exaggerated reflexes in the affected area.
How is a slip disc diagnosed?
- Medical History and Physical Examination: The orthopedic surgeon will review your symptoms, and medical history, and perform a physical examination to assess your range of motion, reflexes, and muscle strength.
- Imaging Studies: X-rays, MRI, or CT scans may be ordered to visualize the spine and identify the location and extent of the disc herniation.
What are the treatment options for a slip disc?
- Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants, or oral corticosteroids may help alleviate pain and inflammation.
- Physical Therapy: Exercises and stretches to improve flexibility, strengthen muscles, and correct posture, reducing pressure on the affected disc and promoting healing.
- Steroid Injections: Epidural steroid injections may be administered to deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly to the affected area and provide temporary pain relief.
- Surgery: In severe cases or when conservative treatments fail to provide relief, surgical options such as discectomy (removal of herniated disc) or spinal fusion may be considered to decompress the affected nerve and stabilize the spine.
